About the mural
As the years pass, the Hispanic community continues to grow within the United
States. Sadly, focus has been placed largely on the negative issues with Hispanic
communities.
Many, if not all, Hispanics arrived to this country knowing little or no English. This
becomes a barrier to many because they cannot follow their specified career
paths and they face difficulties in furthering their education. To most of our
Hispanic parents, school is not a choice. They must work hard to maintain their
families as well as the family they left behind. Many have a full-time and a
part-time job and both parents work, causing them to leave their children in the
care of other family members or with someone they can afford to pay.
One major problem affecting our communities is gangs. Strangers are educating
our youth and the streets are their classrooms. This is where the taste for
violence, drugs, alcohol and the desire to learn how to survive in the streets
replaces the desire to get a higher education. The decision to choose the streets
over education results in teen pregnancy, disabilities caused by the violence, jail
and sometimes death.

Our country is lacking good role models. Today music, movies, television, the Internet and even books are misleading our children. But among all
these bad influences we can find people that are a shining spark of hope to our communities.
The purpose of this mural is to help our children realize that there is more to life than gangs, alcohol and drugs. Besides these thirteen people there
are hundreds of other names that have faced many barriers but they have never given up. They have left their professions, families and beloved
countries behind. Their struggles have made them better people and their lives have made a difference in this country. We should be proud to say
that they are “un Ejemplo Latino”.
