Curriculum
At Loza Studio & Atelier the student will learn to use
both the sight-size and comparative measuring methods
& for drawing and painting. The sight-size method will
allow the student to view a model or object from a
selected position and execute it so that both visually
appear the same size to the artist. The comparative
measuring method uses a system of units to enlarge or
decrease an image as perceived by the student.
Students at Loza Studio & Atelier begin their training by
doing several tonal/value exercieses. Then they will
progress their studies by reproducing in pencil the
lithographs of Charles Bargue Drawing Course developed
in the mid 19th century. Students are taught how to sight
and measure the subject in order to reproduce it
accurately. This exercises are designed to development
their artistic eye and increase their knowledge on
contour, proportion, value, gesture, form and anatomy.

Class

Once a student has acquired the requisite drawing skills by reproducing several accurate pencil copies, students
advance to the next level transitioning from a flat image to a three-dimensional object, students begin to draw
plaster casts of antiquity with charcoal on white paper. This exercise often takes months to master. The finished
product should attain an illusion of reality indistinguishable from the subject itself as seen from a distance. Toward
the end of this stage the student begin to work from the nude model. The human figure demands an understanding
of gesture, proportion, design, and anatomy.
Student will continue working from plaster casts, live models and the still life. They are also introduced to grisaille
painting technique (monochromatic). Emphasizing on drawing accuracy, paint handling and the careful observation
of light and shadow.
In the final stage at LSA the student begins to do full-color figurative and portraiture paintings from a life model as
well as still life paintings.
In addition to the atelier instruction, students are encouraged to take supplemental courses in subjects such as
Artistic Anatomy, Ecorche', Anatomy for Portraiture, etc. Workshops are given by the instructor and visiting artists.
"First, one seeks to become an artist by training the hand – techniques. Then one
finds it is the eye that needs improving – drawing skills. Later, one learns it is the mind
that wants developing – design or composition, only to discover that the ultimate quest
of the artist is in the spirit – content". - Larry Brullo
